From Chronic Pain to Improved Quality of Life
How a client in her early 70s found new movement options with the Rolfing® 10‑Series and ScarWork™

Chronic pain and limited mobility can make everyday life feel very small — especially when there have already been surgeries, long rehabilitation phases, and many treatment attempts. In practice, there are many people who arrive with the feeling that they have “tried everything”, and are still looking for an approach that feels coherent, respectful, and doable.
This client story describes the process of a woman in her early 70s who came through a recommendation with a complex history. This text is a single case report: outcomes are individual and cannot be generalised.
Starting point: long-term symptoms and extensive therapy experience
The client brought several issues that had built up over many years, including:
Persistent symptoms in the hand, with long-term daily use of a brace (with suspected carpal tunnel syndrome)
Chronic back pain after multiple disc surgeries
Chronic pain symptoms in the foot in the context of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
Numerous previous treatment attempts (including massage, physiotherapy, and surgical interventions) which, from her perspective, had not led to the stable change she had hoped for
Approach: a structured process instead of “one technique for everything”
We began with a thorough intake and a shared clarification of goals: What, specifically, should improve in everyday life? Which movements are currently difficult? What is realistic — and what would be a helpful next step?
The client chose the Rolfing® 10‑Series as a structured process. In addition, ScarWork™ elements were integrated to include scars and tissue areas that felt sensitive or “bound” in a gentle way.
A key part of the work was creating a framework that does not rely on “pushing through”, but on dosage, feedback, and ongoing adaptation. Especially with long-standing pain, it can be helpful not to overload the nervous system further, but to build safety, orientation, and step-by-step capacity.
Briefly explained: What is the Rolfing® 10‑Series?
The 10‑Series is a sequence of ten sessions that can be understood as a learning and integration process. It combines hands-on work, body awareness, and functional input — with the aim of expanding movement options and helping the body organise itself more efficiently in gravity.
Typically, the work moves through three broad phases:
Sessions 1–3: orientation, surface layers, breathing, and basic tension patterns
Sessions 4–7: more focus on “core” themes such as pelvis, spine, stability, and coordination
Sessions 8–10: integration into everyday movement and real-life contexts
It is not a rigid protocol: each session is adapted to the client’s daily condition, medical history, and tolerance.
Briefly explained: What is ScarWork™?
ScarWork™ is a gentle, non-invasive approach that focuses on scar tissue and the surrounding area. The aim is to support comfort, body awareness, and mobility around scars — always within the individual medical history and what feels safe and tolerable.
Realistic expectations: change as a process
With chronic symptoms, a common hope is fast relief. At the same time, experience often shows that when symptoms have been present for years, sustainable change is usually more of a process than a single “aha moment”.
So the focus was not only “Where does it hurt?”, but also:
Which movements are being avoided — and why?
Which areas seem overloaded, which under-supported?
How can everyday load be dosed more realistically?
Which small steps are stable and repeatable?
Observed changes over time
After completing the 10‑Series and the additional ScarWork™ work, the client reported several changes that mattered in her daily life:
After a long time, she no longer needed the hand brace.
A further corrective surgery that had been under consideration no longer felt necessary from her perspective.
The hand symptoms reduced significantly.
Back symptoms and foot symptoms also improved subjectively.
Overall, she experienced the process as supportive, calm, and well guided.
In the client’s words
“Since Tobias started working with my hand, I no longer need the brace. The pain has really disappeared completely. My other issues such as back pain and Morbus Sudeck have also improved significantly. Tobias is very empathetic, calm, and always takes time. I feel in the best hands and can wholeheartedly recommend him.”
Why this story matters
Client stories are not studies — and they do not replace medical assessment. But they can show what a structured, individual process can look like when chronic symptoms are not viewed only as a “problem area”, but as an interaction between load, movement, tissue, the nervous system, and everyday life.
